Whilst on the ski trip...So, once skiers are in resort they have already made most of their choices and lots of things in the destination are out of our control - however there are still many ways skiers can take responsibility and have a better holiday and look after the destination.
When skiing or snowboarding - keep the mountains pristine... - Don’t litter or discard cigarette butts on the mountain – take it to the recycling points in the mountain restaurants or down in the village - Don’t ski in out-of-bounds areas – either through the trees or off-piste – they are there not only for your safety but to protect the wildlife and their habitats - Don’t ski on a slope that is bare – you’ll damage your skis and the flora underneath - No need to buy water in plastic bottles – tap water is perfectly good and often mineral water quality – take a reusable bottle or hydration pack and fill up When going out and about - enjoy the journey... - Use the ski bus, train or walk when going around the resort or visiting other resorts – it’s more relaxing and you’ll see more And when you’re not skiing – explore some more... - Try some other activities – you’ll have fun and have some great experiences to take home with you – try cross country skiing, snowshoe walking, a sleigh ride, ski touring, a wildlife walk – they all are low impact and allow you time and peace to enjoy the mountains - Find out more about the local culture - see how cheese is made, visit the alpine museum, chat to the locals and understand what alpine life is really all about - Enjoy the local delicacies – purchase locally sourced food and drink and ensure that the restaurants you choose are locally run and source their products from the region – memorable food and drink make for a great holiday - Enjoy the local après ski entertainment – yes those local music nights - they keep the local traditions alive - Buy souvenirs that are locally made rather than imported – after all – they will be more unique and you’ll remember your holiday with something that actually comes from there! And in your accommodation... - If you are able to – turn the heating down/off during the day - Unplug those chargers - Turn off the lights when you’re not there - If you are able to - turn on the sauna only when you’re going to use it - Sort your rubbish into the recycling bins - And yes - we had to mention it - don’t forget those towels – do they really need washing every day? Now relax and enjoy a Responsible Skiing holiday! |
