The Free Ski Bus in Lech, AustriaWhilst a free ski bus is not very unique – as a case study – this one is a very interesting example for the difference it can make. In the first winter season in 1997, 9 buses were launched to cover 4 routes linking all the hamlets and villages and it carried 850,000 visitors. 10 years later 12 buses were used and the number of visitors nearly doubled. Many of these journeys would have been conducted by car without the bus. The bus has a clear London Underground style map and is frequent enough to not require prior planning. Importantly for local residents, it runs year round and thus also reduces the car usage of the local population. Pollution and congestion have, of course, both reduced dramatically.
