                                                            Getting to the ski resort...

So, there are likely to be three parts to the journey; getting to the international departure point, the international travel and then the local transfer.   Without doubt, the international flight is the largest contributor to CO2 emissions of the whole holiday.   However, you can help your readers make choices to reduce their impact for each part of the journey and in many cases they will have a more relaxing journey in the process...

Getting to the international departure point...

Advise your readers to consider how they get to the airport, train station, or coach station and take public transport if they can.   The train or tube is the best method since the CO2 emissions are the lowest, there is no contribution to congestion and no parking costs.   If that is not possible, the coach or bus are best and again save on parking costs.

                                                            The international journey...

The single biggest change everyone can make to reduce the CO2 emissions of their ski holiday is to choose to travel by train.   This is now a real option and often takes the same time as flying door-to-door as you avoid the lengthy check ins, waiting for luggage etc.  It is also very relaxing and scenic and often gives extra time on the piste!   For advice on the best way to get there – visit www.seat61.com or www.snowcarbon.com

If it is not possible to travel by train, the next best method is to go by coach preferably by Eurotunnel.   Various tour operators offer a coach option.   Next best with a full fuel efficient car, preferably by eurotunnel

Otherwise, if flying there are several positive steps you can recommend to your readers...

                                                            Choose the airline carefully...

Think about the airline – charter flights normally have high load factors meaning lower CO2 emissions per person and some of their fleets are quite new.

Alternatively – check out this carbon friendly flight search which allows a full search for flights and then enables one to choose the most carbon efficient flight – based on information provided by the airlines themselves.

                                                            Think about the transfer...

Ask your readers to iInvestigate whether there is a train direct to the resort or to a train station nearby.  Many resorts are well served by trains and it’s a relaxing way to get there.   Even if the station is not directly in the resort there are often bus services that co-ordinate with the trains.

                                                            Find out
whether the resort or a private company offer coach transfers to the resort – there are many scheduled services designed to co-ordinate with the international flights.

See whether the tour operator offers train transfers or recommend that skiers use their organised coach service.

                                                            Finally, i
f your readers have to hire a car, recommend that they select a low emission, efficient vehicle.
